Zakah – Compulsory Charity
Zakah is the compulsory charity which must be given once a year by all Muslims who possess at least a minimum amount of wealth. It amounts to 2.5% of one’s surplus cash savings and wealth held for one complete year. The poor have the right to zakah from the wealthy. Zakah seeks to alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, and spiritually purify the wealth of the giver.
